Vodafone Ghana Foundation partners Kirusa to extend awareness on Ebola

Spreads awareness through ‘Ebola Public Health Project’

New Providence, New Jersey and Accra, Ghana, 23 February, 2015: Vodafone Ghana, a leading telecom operator in Ghana, and Kirusa, the leader in voice messaging and social media solutions for mobile users in emerging markets, have announced the launch of ‘Ebola Public Health Project’ under Vodafone’s Ghana Foundation’s ‘Mobile for Good’ initiative, on Kirusa’s platform.

This is a unique initiative in the area of Public Health Education and will involve the dissemination of content on the Ebola outbreak to Vodafone subscribers for free. The project, which commenced in November 2014, is expected to run up to April 2015. The platform provided by Kirusa will also support incoming calls from outside the network as well as international sources to retrieve the same content, which will also be refreshed weekly.

Commenting on the partnership, Nana Yaa Afriyie Ofori-Koree, Head of Vodafone Ghana Foundation and Sustainability said, “Mobile for Good - is one of our integral projects to support various organizations that are using mobile technology to solve socio-economic challenges across the country. With the launch of the initiative, we are reiterating our promise to invest more into the communities we serve, reach out to people in need and promote high standards in the telecommunication industry. The Ebola epidemic has taken a huge toll in West Africa. This is our endeavor to spread awareness amongst our countrymen and make Ghana an Ebola- free country. We are delighted to partner with Kirusa, facilitating us to take this initiative to as many people as possible.”

Vodafone Ghana Foundation’s ‘Mobile for Good’ initiative empowers Ghanaians to deploy mobile technology in a way that impacts the lives of ordinary people, socially and economically. At the launch, seven applicants were awarded funds between GH¢50,000 and GH¢100,000 to pilot their technology projects and demonstrate its impact on Ghanaians. The selected projects are diverse in concept, covering issues such as maternal health, HIV/AIDS, literacy, e-learning, blood donation and challenges with the emergency services.

InstaVoice caters to both smartphone and feature phone users, allowing all Glo subscribers to communicate with anyone across the globe, promoting universal reach. Users can send an InstaVoice message to a friend by simply dialling star (*) followed by the recipient’s number to record and send a message. They can also record and send a message if a call goes unanswered or cannot be completed. Similarly, smartphones users can use the InstaVoice app to send messages to any friend, including those who don’t use the app. To send a voice message using the InstaVoice app, users can press and hold the record button to record a message.

Voice SMS, missed call alerts, and text messages are delivered over the data channel to smartphone users who have the InstaVoice app, so they can view the messages as part of their chat history with their friends. Recipients who do not have the app will get the InstaVoice messages as an SMS with an embedded number. Recipients only have to click this number to listen to the message, and to reply to the message.

With this launch, Etisalat customers can now send and receive voice messages easily, to and from other mobile users in Nigeria, and also across the globe.

InstaVoice, on the Etisalat network, simplifies voice messaging for both smartphone and feature phone users, bringing these in to the daily experiences of mobile users. To send an InstaVoice message to a friend, an Etisalat user can simply dial *(star) followed by the recipient’s number to record and sends a message. They can also record a message if a call goes unanswered or cannot be completed for any reason. Etisalat users can also use the InstaVoice app on Smartphones to send messages; they press and hold the record button in the app to record and send a message, regardless of whether the recipient has the app or not.

A missed call, voice, or text message is delivered over the data channel to Smartphone users with the InstaVoice app, so they can view the messages as part of the chat history with their friends. Recipients, who do not have the app, get the InstaVoice message as an SMS with an embedded number. Recipients can dial the number inside the InstaVoice to listen to the message, and to reply to the message.

Using the Kirusa cloud, the InstaVoice messages can be delivered to InstaVoice app users on smartphones, as well as to feature phone users anywhere in the world.
